Sustainable Living
Sustainable Living
We will reduce carbon emissions and embrace sustainability by consuming less, recycling more, and taking public transport. We will also work towards our vision of becoming a Zero Waste Nation powered by a circular economy, with “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” as a norm for citizens and businesses.
A Zero Waste Nation and a Circular Economy
We aim to be a zero waste nation powered by a circular economy, with a high rate of recycling so that our precious resources can be used many times over. We have closed our water loop by recycling our used water to make NEWater, and will make a similar strong push towards circularity in waste materials to transform trash to treasure. The extended producer responsibility scheme for e-waste and the beverage container return scheme aim to establish circular business models, where products are collected at the end of life for recycling. We are also creating more avenues and putting in place behavioural nudges to encourage all stakeholders to live more sustainably by reducing waste and recycling right.
Eco Stewardship Programme (ESP)
The Eco Stewardship Programme (ESP) has been implemented in all MOE schools from Primary to Pre-University with the aim of nurturing generations of Singaporeans to be stewards of the environment. MOE will also strengthen the curriculum and school programmes on sustainability. We will work towards a two-thirds reduction of net carbon emissions from the schools sector by 2030, and aim for at least 20% of schools to be carbon neutral by 2030.
Green Commutes
We are making good progress towards achieving our goal of bringing 8 in 10 households within a 10-minute walk of a train station by the 2030s. The rail network will be expanded to 360km (from around 270km today) by the early 2030s. We have announced plans to expand the cycling network to around 1,300 km by 2030. We will also do more to repurpose roads, and implement pedestrianisation where possible.
